The SolidNetWork License (SNL) file is a text file containing license information that clients access to check licenses in and out.
To obtain an SNL file:
Type your Email Address and Password and click Sign-In, or create a new account.
Click Register My Products.
Enter your serial number and other requested information.
A license file is emailed to you.
When you receive the email, copy the SNL file (text file) to your hard drive.

You should obtain a new license file:
If an SNL license expires.
For a new major release of SolidWorks (not a service pack).
Subscription customers must upgrade the SolidNetWork License Manager before upgrading licenses. See Upgrading the Network License Manager.
If you are a non-subscription customer, you can upgrade the license file without upgrading the SNL Manager
To upgrade the license file without upgrading the SNL Manager:
In Windows, click Start, All Programs, SolidWorks <version>, SolidWorks <version>, SolidWorks Tools, SolidNetWork License Administrator.
On the Server Administration tab, under License Server, click Stop.
Under License File, click Modify, then click Next until you reach the Licenses box.
In the Licenses box, click Read.
Remove
old or expired licenses.
In the Read Licenses dialog box, click Browse, locate the new SNL File, then click OK.
In the SolidNetWork License File Wizard dialog box, select Reread license file (after Finish), then click Finish.
In the SolidNetWork License Administrator dialog box, under License Server, click Start, then click OK.
Install the new SolidWorks service pack.
