Updating Administrative Images

To update clients who installed from an administrative image, first update the administrative image. Run the Installation Manager from the Internet so that the correct files are referenced. The Installation Manager will redirect itself to do this, or you can run the update directly from the SolidWorks Downloads Web site (www.solidworks.com/downloads).

Once you have updated the administrative image (which creates a new copy of the image), you can update clients by having them reference the new copy of the administrative image.

If clients referenced the previous version of the administrative image using a mapped drive or a shared directory, you could redefine that mapped drive or shared directory using the location of the updated copy of the administrative image.

To download updated installation files:

  1. Start the SolidWorks Installation Manager by inserting the DVD.

  2. On the Welcome screen, enter the serial number and click Next. The Installation Manager checks the SolidWorks Web site for your licensed products and available service packs.

  3. On the Newer Version Available screen, select Download and install the new version: SolidWorks 2008 SPx (closes this installer) and click Next.

  4. On the Download Installation Manager Files screen, accept the default directory for the new installation files or enter a new directory name. Click Next. If you see a message that the directory does not exist, click Yes to create it.

  5. On the Download Complete screen, click Close to close the current installer and start the installer for the new version.

To update the administrative image:

  1. When you complete the previous section, the SolidWorks Installation Manager automatically starts. The Welcome screen appears with the serial number filled in. Click Next.

  2. The Installation Manager checks the SolidWorks Web site for the licensed products, and it checks to see if service packs are available. Since you just updated to the latest version of SolidWorks, on the Install SolidWorks 2008 SPx screen you will see:

This is the latest version available. Click Next to continue.

On the Install SolidWorks 2008 SPx screen, select Administrative Image and Server products and Create an administrative image on a server, and click Next.

  3. The next screen lets you change the default installation. Normally, this is not necessary since the installer selects your licensed products. Click Next.

  4. On the SolidWorks Options screen, use the settings appropriate for your installation and select Upgrade the most recent existing installation of SolidWorks, and click Next. If you do not choose to upgrade the most recent existing installation of SolidWorks, a new version of SolidWorks will be installed next to the existing installation when the Service Pack is applied to the client.

  5. On the Toolbox Options screen, select the appropriate choice for your installation and click Next.

  6. On the Installation Options screen, select the network drive and directory where the original administrative image files are located. Select any other options appropriate to your installation and click Next.

  7. A dialog box appears stating that the directory you chose already contains an administrative image of SolidWorks. Enter a different name for the directory of the new Installation Manager image and click OK.

  8. On the Installation Files screen, select Download files from SolidWorks via the Internet and click Next.

  9. The Download Installation Files screen lets you control the download process. Accept the defaults unless you need to make changes and click Next to begin the download.

The Installation Manager:

The Installation Manager does not download a full version of SolidWorks. When the download completes, two SolidWorks installers are available to clients:

  1. The Ready To Install screen lets you control when the installation runs. Choose when to run the installation and click Next.

  2. On the Installation is Complete screen, make your selections and click Finish.

  3. To upgrade clients using the new administrative image, see Upgrading Clients from Administrative Images.
